ROH (1/04/19)- Elite-Less But Still Very Good

**Note: A typo was placed earlier stating this was from the 1/11/19 episode. This is from the 1/4/19 episode. Apologies for the confusion.**

The Elite may be gone from ROH. But can ROH be elite without them? Or even just very good?
ROH Thoughts.

- Ian is out with the four men who earned World Championship opportunities in 2018: Chris Sabin, Flip Gordon, Dalton Castle, and Marty Scurll. They will compete in a Four Corner Survival Match to determine who will get the World Championship opportunity at Honor Reigns Supreme on Sunday, January 13th (I guess I have a show to review now. Lol.). Ian introduces the ROH World Champion who retained his title.... and out comes Matt Taven, the self-proclaimed and anointed ROH World Champion. All four men in the ring are roasted by Taven, including Marty Scurll. He tells him "I guess you have to be this high to get a trip to Jacksonville." BURN! Jay Lethal comes out and confronts the pretender. They start fighting back and forth as ROH personnel come out to break them up.
(Really good opening to this show. I rolled my eyes admittedly when Taven came out. But he got some good one-liners in on his promo and continued to set up an eventual "Champion" vs. Champion  match.)

- Luchasaurus faces Jeff Cobb in a Proving Ground match. Saurus hits a big spinning kick to the face of Cobb immediately. Saurus is impressive here with a lot of hard-hitting moves. But Cobb continues to be impressive as well with a vertical suplex off the corner and a standing moonsault on Saurus. Chokeslam followed by a moonsault of his own only gets a 2 for Saurus a moment later. Cobb nails an overhead belly to belly off the corner on Saurus and a piledriver. TOUR OF THE ISLANDS. 1-2-3. Saurus looked decent here despite taking the loss.  Cobb is still the monster of ROH that may be heading for someone else's title before too long.

- Kelly Klein, the new WOH World Champion, comes out to the ring next to take on Nikki Addams. Klein announces that going forward, including tonight, every singles match she competes in will be for the WOH World Champion. Addams refuses to shake the hand for the Code of Honor. Klein makes her pay moments later.  A knee lift to the head ends the match very quickly with Klein getting the victory.

Jenny Rose comes out after the match and challenges Klein to a Street Fight at Honor Reigns Supreme for the WOH World Champion. Klein says she will see her on the streets.

- Christopher Daniels comes out next. (Note: This was taped prior to his departure for AEW.) He talks about how bad Final Battle was for SCU. Daniels says his goodbyes to ROH and reviews the memories of working in ROH. Out comes ROH COO Joe Koff who thanks Daniels for his actions at Final Battle. Shane Taylor comes out and attacks Daniels. They fight back and forth, but Taylor ends up getting the advantage by throwing Daniels into a ring post several times. And then, he goes to work on Daniels in the ring. He gives Daniels a Sitdown Tombstone on the chair, rips up the contract, and stuffs it in Daniels's mouth. Well, that explains why Christopher Daniels will no longer be in ROH.

-Zack Sabre Jr. will make his ROH TV debut next week. Here's hoping we get more of Sabre and Juice on ROH.

- Flip Gordon vs. Marty Scurll vs. Dalton Castle vs. Chris Sabin is our main event. Jay Lethal is on commentary, and he immediately reminds people how sick he is of Matt Taven's mouth. Really good opening segment where with everyone getting a moment to shine. Scurll plays up his villain persona, Sabin and Flip do some nice aerial moves, and Castle gets to show off his charisma. Flip and Scurll end up going back and forth with chops. A four man submission happens with Flip suffering a submission hold from 2 different men at the same time (toe hold and a crossface). Moments later, Flip is able to "flip" his way into a position of dominance in the match. But Sabin knocks him down off the apron. Sabin's problem is that he dives at Dalton Castle in the wrong position and takes the "Bang-A-Rang." 1-2-3. Dalton Castle faces Jay Lethal at Honor Reigns Supreme.

Overall, a good reset for Ring of Honor in the wake of losing so much talent. There wasn't too much to dislike here as everything served a purpose, even Shane Taylor just destroying Daniels and ripping up his ROH contract. Dalton Castle gets to become the next victim of Jay Lethal's run as ROH World Champion. Jeff Cobb continues to look dominant as ROH TV Champion and is probably the one who will take the ROH World Championship from Lethal when the time comes. And you get some good action from some of the best ROH still has to offer. You add in an appearance soon from Zack Sabre Jr., and ROH still has some life left in it. ROH can still continue to work as a third-tier wrestling promotion as long as it allows its performers to perform high-quality matches.

Until next time, take care of yourselves. Spread some awesomeness.

UnWrest Focus REWIND: Vader vs. Cactus Jack (WCW Halloween Havoc, 10/24/1993)

Spin the Wheel, Make The Deal. That was the gimmick going into this iconic match between two of the hardest hitting wrestlers of all time. It was the storyline months in development: Cactus Jack had just returned after Vader mauled him with a battery of injuries and a concussion to get his revenge. Vader, a merciless monster who delivers pain and punishment to all his vicitms, faced Cactus Jack, the one guy who would take Vader's assault and like the orphan Annie would ask for more. And if Vader wanted to brawl, no one could take Vader's offense and return it in spades quite like Cactus Jack. So, WCW billed the match as "Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal." The idea being that the actual stipulation of the match would be determined on Halloween Havoc by the spin of a big wheel. (If only wrestling could take the "Big Wheel" from The Price is Right. And of course, we'd have to make sure it goes all the way around.) So, the wheel landed that night on a Texas D

WCW Spring Stampede 1994 Review- WCW At Its Best + Flair/Steamboat In Another Classic

It's WCW in early 1994. We're now working up the hype for the eventual debut of Hulk Hogan to the company. This seems like the final last gasp of what WCW was prior to Hogan's debut with the company. Tonight, we are getting WCW World Champion Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat 5 years after their classic feud (covered on UnWrest Focus earlier). We are also getting International World Champion Ravishing Rick Rude vs. Sting. We also have Steve Austin defending his U.S. Championship against The Great Muta! And Cactus Jack and Maxx Payne go to war with The Nasty Boys in a Chicago Street Fight. Here we go! Mean Gene Okerlund welcomes us to the show as fireworks go off. We're in the Rosemont Horizon in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. Aaron Neville sings the National Anthem holding on to as many harmonies and vowels as he can. Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan put over the main event. 1) Johnny B. Badd vs. Diamond Dallas Page (w/ Diamond Doll) Badd comes out dressed like
