UnWrest (MLW, 12/28/18)- Konnan vs. Low Ki (and others)

The feud between Konnan and Salina de la Renta's group has now culminated in a NO DQ match between the Mexican wrestling legend and MLW World Champion Low Ki. With the title on the line in Konnan's hometown, this has a big match feel.

Let's Do This...

MLW Thoughts
- We get a recap of the Konnan vs. Low Ki/Salina storyline to start the show. We also get a recap of the Tom Lawlor victory over Simon Gotch last week. Simon Gotch vows to make a statement tonight.

- The first match is a 5 Minute Simon Gotch Prize Fight where he's putting his money given by Salina de la Renta for betraying Tom Lawlor on the line. Simon promises to deal with the reprobates of MLW and challenges anyone who wants the shot at his money. 400lb Ace Romero answers the challenge. Heavy chops to Romero early on, but Gorch makes the mistake of trying to pick up Romero. Romero's size proves to be too much for Gotch to handle 1-on-1. All Romero has to do is last the 5 minutes to get the money. Romero beats Gotch with a running low splash onto Gotch. He now is $20,000 richer. He throws some out to the crowd.

- Kotto Brazil's injury is discussed. A video plays next of Ricky Martinez in a limo with a bunch of scantily dressed women partying it up. Martinez has supposedly been suspended indefinitely without pay for his actions. Martinez doesn't care. Salina will get him back in no time. He shows off the money he has for the incident.

- Andrew Everett takes on Ariel Dominguez next. Everett actually has a  size advantage on Dominguez and uses it to his advantage. But Dominguez hits a Chaos Theory Rolling German Suplex to put down Everett for a moment. Everett retakes the advantage, but he gets met with knees coming down from a Shooting Star Press attempt. Dominguez rolls him up for a 3. Good enough match, but it was far too short to give a good or bad grade for. Still, both men had an impressive spot in the match.

- Konnan cuts a promo backstage. He's going to expose both Salina and Low Ki and take the MLW World Championship tonight. He will drown Low Ki in front of the world.

- A clip of last week's tag match with Barrington Hughes/Tommy Dreamer taking on The Hart Foundation. They show Pillman hitting the low blow to roll-up Dreamer for the win. Dreamer cuts a promo applauding Pillman for his ability to take advantage of him. Dreamer wants Pillman in a Singapore Cane Match in 2 weeks on MLW. Dreamer sees the insecurities in Pillman's eyes, and he's going to take advantage of it. Dreamer cuts a great promo about his physical and mental scars. Great work from Dreamer here on this promo.

- A video is shown of the problems between Tom Lawlor and Low Ki over the last two weeks. Lawlor cuts a promo saying that Low Ki has been running from him for 7 months.

- After a Hart Foundation promo, we get the announcement that next week, Teddy Hart will take on Pentagon Jr. (Yes, please!) Plus, LA PARK will take on Gringo Loco.

- The Main Event is Konnan vs. Low Ki in a NO DQ match for the MLW World Championship. Both men are cutting promos on the other during the ring introductions. Low Ki attacks the referee as the bell rings, and Konnan hits Low Ki with some sort of loaded object. Martinez drags out Low Ki before a 3 can be counted. Low Ki gets back in the ring, but Konnan again just decks him and locks in the Tequila Sunrise. Martinez jumps Konnan in the ring and helps Low Ki put down a beating on the veteran. Low Ki accidentally dropkicks Martinez, and Konnan gives a blatant low blow. Salina runs in the ring. Konnan is distracted, allowing Low Ki to go on the attack. Low Ki is given a beer bottle. A Curb Stomp to Konnan sending him face first through the beer bottle. Konnan is bleeding as is Low Ki (from earlier). Martinez and Low Ki gang up on Konnan in the ring. Hijo de LA PARK comes in to join in the assault. Low Ki attacks the kidneys of Konnan viciously. The referee calls for the bell to end the match. Low Ki retains, but that's not what matters. Konnan is bleeding like a stuck pig as Low Ki sticks Konnan in the kidneys with a spike. Tom Lawlor runs in to attack all of Low Ki's allies.

Backstage, Pentagon Jr. is shown lying in pain after a supposed attack from Salina's group. (Very good job here by MLW to wrap up a loophole in showing Pentagon being laid out, as well as mentioning that Fenix was not in the building.) Overall, this wasn't a great match but more of a progression of the angle. Konnan being able to do anything physical after his health scares over the last decade plus is a miracle in and of itself, and you will not find me condemning a legend like Konnan doing this match to help put over a talent. This whole thing furthered the feud between Salina's group and the rest of MLW, and it added to my anticipation for the Lawlor-Low Ki match in February.

Overall, this was a good edition of MLW in terms of adding more fuel to some of their ongoing storylines. The main event angle needs to be seen as that and not a wrestling match. In that regard, it was a success as was this show.

Until next time, take care of yourselves. Spread some awesomeness.

UnWrest Focus REWIND: Vader vs. Cactus Jack (WCW Halloween Havoc, 10/24/1993)

Spin the Wheel, Make The Deal. That was the gimmick going into this iconic match between two of the hardest hitting wrestlers of all time. It was the storyline months in development: Cactus Jack had just returned after Vader mauled him with a battery of injuries and a concussion to get his revenge. Vader, a merciless monster who delivers pain and punishment to all his vicitms, faced Cactus Jack, the one guy who would take Vader's assault and like the orphan Annie would ask for more. And if Vader wanted to brawl, no one could take Vader's offense and return it in spades quite like Cactus Jack. So, WCW billed the match as "Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal." The idea being that the actual stipulation of the match would be determined on Halloween Havoc by the spin of a big wheel. (If only wrestling could take the "Big Wheel" from The Price is Right. And of course, we'd have to make sure it goes all the way around.) So, the wheel landed that night on a Texas D

WCW Spring Stampede 1994 Review- WCW At Its Best + Flair/Steamboat In Another Classic

It's WCW in early 1994. We're now working up the hype for the eventual debut of Hulk Hogan to the company. This seems like the final last gasp of what WCW was prior to Hogan's debut with the company. Tonight, we are getting WCW World Champion Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat 5 years after their classic feud (covered on UnWrest Focus earlier). We are also getting International World Champion Ravishing Rick Rude vs. Sting. We also have Steve Austin defending his U.S. Championship against The Great Muta! And Cactus Jack and Maxx Payne go to war with The Nasty Boys in a Chicago Street Fight. Here we go! Mean Gene Okerlund welcomes us to the show as fireworks go off. We're in the Rosemont Horizon in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. Aaron Neville sings the National Anthem holding on to as many harmonies and vowels as he can.
