Focus: Sting vs. Vader- Part 4: Beach Blast 1993

Sting and Vader's feud had become the thing of legend by the middle of 1993. And like many other great feuds, eventually other wrestlers became involved in the rivalry. By the summer of 1993, Sting would have a new ally against Vader in the form of "The British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith. However, the monster Vader would find another ally in the ruthless, sadistic, psychopathic terror of professional wrestling Sid Vicious. Together, Sid and Vader would form "The Masters of the Powerbomb," an alliance that would rain terror on the WCW roster. The only two men willing to stand up to them were Sting and Davey Boy Smith.

Would Sid and Vader be able to powerbomb their way to victory? Let's find out.

Sting and Davey Boy Smith vs. Sid Vicious and Vader (w/ Col. Robert Parker and Harley Race)

Vader and Sid are the first ones out and look like 2 dudes you do not want to meet in a dark alley. Sting and Davey Boy come out next with matching colored coats on. (Sting has the American Stars and Stripes on to match The Union Jack on Bulldog's coat.)

The bell rings. Both teams face off. Sid and Sting start off. Sting goes right after Sid with a series of punches. Faceplant Bulldog by Sting. Another one. Sid gets a one-armed chokeslam on Sting to kill that offense. He decks Sting and puts him in the corner. Bulldog runs in to try to stop the attack. But he gets sent back into the corner. Both men get sent to the floor while The Masters of the Powerbomb celebrate. Sting and Bulldog climb the corner behind their back and knock Sid and Vader down and out of the ring. They gather themselves outside the ring to strategize.
Vader and Bulldog are now legal in the ring. Vader starts the assault in the corner with several clobbering blows. Clothesline knocks Bulldog down. Bulldog GETS VADER UP FOR A DELAYED VERTICAL SUPLEX AND CONNECTS! Seconds later, though, Vader gets the standing splash on Bulldog and elbows him for good measure. Sid is back in for The Masters. He gets clobbered by a Vader elbow and a Sid boot in a double team. Sid continues the attack. Sid has a chinlock on Bulldog as the crowd rallies for Bulldog. Bulldog tries to tag, but Sid steps on the head. Tag to Vader. Another standing splash to Bulldog. Sting rips off Vader's head gear off, and they start going at it. But seconds later, Vader goes back to work on Smith. Vader continues to work on Bulldog. Sid is tagged in and hits a Double Ax Handle off the corner. Headlock on Davey by Sid. Again, the crowd is deeply invested in the match trying to will Smith up. Davey Boy slams Sid. But Sid grabs Smith and rolls over to tag Vader. Race holds up Bulldog, but Vader hits Race by accident.

Bulldog tags Sting to the roar of the crowd. Sting goes after both Vader and Sid. Sid does a Terry Funk impersonation on the ropes with the seated selling. Dropkick to Vader knocking him down. Vader misses a splash, but Sting gets decked by Sid and Vader, knocking him down. Sid is tagged in. Sid clobbers down on the chest of Sting while the crowd is trying to will Sting on. A boot to the throat of Sting now. Tag to Vader. Vader does the trademark shots in the corner. Sting collapses near The Masters corner. Vader climbs the ropes and hits a standing Sting coming down. He places Sting on the corner. A suplex is blocked by Sting. Sting bites Vader and pushes him off the corner. Vader drops an elbow on Sting to stop any hope for a tag. Tag to Sid. Repeated kicks to the ribs of Sting. Sid goes for an elbow drop, but Sting avoids it.
Sting tags in Smith. Smith goes after Sid. Bulldog runs into the boot of Sid. Tag to Vader. "Vader" chant by some in the crowd. Samoan Drop by Vader gets a 2. Vader is going on the corner. Vader Bomb! 1... Sting saves Bulldog. Sid throws Sting onto the runway. Vader climbs back up the corner. HE GOES ALL THE WAY UP! VADERSAULT ON BULLDOG'S HEAD! Sting makes the save by running the runway and leaping over the ropes. (Sid was slammed on the runway by Sting beforehand.)  Davey Boy gets a crucifix roll-up on Vader! 1-2-3!!!!

Vader is throwing a temper tantrum at ringside, going after Tony Schiavone and destroying a bunch of metal chairs.

Winners: Davey Boy Smith and Sting
Match Grade: B+. A really fun main event match here. Sid and Vader played their role perfectly as monsters that were dominant throughout the match. Likewise, Sting and Bulldog played their role of underdogs extremely well here. Tag Team matches as main events can work, but such a match has to be done a right way to work up a crowd. Having two monsters face two beloved babyfaces helped the cause, and the action from all four men helped as well. The Vadersault is the most impressive athletic maneuver you will ever see a Super Heavyweight do. I don't care if some 450lb man does a 450 Splash sometime in the future. Nothing will ever top the Vadersault.

Vader and Sting's rivalry would continue throughout 1993 and would involve Sid and Davey Boy Smith. This would include the next PPV event, WarGames 1993 (the review of that match can be found in a link below). However, this rivalry would have one last great one-on-one encounter at Slamboree 1994. And that's where we will end the Focus on Sting vs. Vader. So, be sure to check that out.

UnWrest Focus REWIND: Vader vs. Cactus Jack (WCW Halloween Havoc, 10/24/1993)

Spin the Wheel, Make The Deal. That was the gimmick going into this iconic match between two of the hardest hitting wrestlers of all time. It was the storyline months in development: Cactus Jack had just returned after Vader mauled him with a battery of injuries and a concussion to get his revenge. Vader, a merciless monster who delivers pain and punishment to all his vicitms, faced Cactus Jack, the one guy who would take Vader's assault and like the orphan Annie would ask for more. And if Vader wanted to brawl, no one could take Vader's offense and return it in spades quite like Cactus Jack. So, WCW billed the match as "Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal." The idea being that the actual stipulation of the match would be determined on Halloween Havoc by the spin of a big wheel. (If only wrestling could take the "Big Wheel" from The Price is Right. And of course, we'd have to make sure it goes all the way around.) So, the wheel landed that night on a Texas D

WCW Spring Stampede 1994 Review- WCW At Its Best + Flair/Steamboat In Another Classic

It's WCW in early 1994. We're now working up the hype for the eventual debut of Hulk Hogan to the company. This seems like the final last gasp of what WCW was prior to Hogan's debut with the company. We are also getting International World Champion Ravishing Rick Rude vs. Sting. We also have Steve Austin defending his U.S. Championship against The Great Muta!
