UnWrest (October 26, 2018)- Thoughts on This Week in TV Wrestling

This was a very hard week for wrestling fans. On one hand, we saw a real life horrible situation unfold in front of our very eyes where one of the big stars in the industry is fighting a real life battle. We also had WWE stick to its Crown Jewel location while cutting promotion for their All-Women event Evolution. And Impact Wrestling continued its downward trend towards assured destruction in 2019. But there were some bright spots this week in WWE and around the world of wrestling. So, here's a review of Raw, SmackDown, NXT, NXT UK, MLW, and ROH along with the usual Podcast Recommendation of the Week.

Let's Do This!

UnWrest: The Unstoppable Force Meeting The Immoveable Object...

Raw Thoughts
- There's only so much I can do for this particular show. My mind was preoccupied for most of the evening, as I imagine most of your minds were, when Roman/Joe told the world about his real-life leukemia diagnosis. This just bothered me for most of the rest of the show, and I wasn't able to give a lot of the show its due attention. So, I apologize in advance. Roman's honesty and courage in discussing his condition was something to behold. Obviously, I speak for most fans and decent human beings when I say that I wish nothing but the best to him as he continues to fight this horrible condition.
- Finn Balor beat Bobby Lashley. I wish I could say more, but I was obviously still reeling from what I had just seen in the first segment.
- DX and The Brothers of Destruction continued their attempt to promote the money-grab that is Crown Jewel. Again, it was just the basic stuff here: worked shoot promos with bad humor by DX, overproduced segments with graves and dirt by The Brothers of Destruction. Again, my mind was elsewhere.
- Elias turned face tonight, which got the crowd popped. I think it's time. Especially given everything that's happened in the last few weeks, WWE needed to do something to freshen up Elias' gimmick. This could work for him as long as he continues to talk smack about the local crowd. I think he'd lose his edge if he didn't do something like that in even a more joking, light-hearted manner.
- Paul Heyman had the hard task of trying to transition from the Roman Reigns situation to the new Universal Championship match at Crown Jewel. Did he really do that? Well, I don't think he really could have done any better. That being said, it was very awkward.
- Evolution got some build on this show, but it felt like a show that's very much an afterthought to WWE. Tickets have not sold well, and I think they're ready to just throw their hands up in the air and move on. They can always just mention how great it was that they did the event, even if the arena is half-full at best and the WWE is selling their souls a little bit more by working Saudi Arabia 6 days later.
- Good main event with Rollins and Ambrose getting the feel good Tag Team Championship victory. And then...
AMBROSE TURNED ON ROLLINS! Wow. They did the switch on this show of all shows. Could they have not waited a week? This felt really shoehorned on the show and a little dirty considering it is basically taking advantage of a real life situation that unfolded hours before. Wait a week. Then do the turn. That would have added a lot to the moment, in my opinion.

It's hard to evaluate a show like this. But taking the Roman situation out of it, a lot of stuff remained the same. But there were some noticeable shifts in the Raw landscape: Elias and Braun went from Heels to Faces; Dean from Face to Heel. I still would have held off on that heel turn for a week. That being said, I can't really give a fair grade to this show. The announcement earlier in the show just took my mind completely off of giving this any sort of legitimate criticism.

SmackDown Live Thoughts
- WWE did a good job at the beginning making The Bar and The Big Show seem like an unstoppable force in the tag team division. How long will that last? Who knows? And someone give Kofi a pay raise for all those chokeslams he took tonight.
- We got another rematch this week with The Usos facing Daniel Bryan and AJ Styles. And like last week, we had a good match that ended when The Usos caught a miscommunication between AJ and Daniel. This time it was AJ who hit Bryan by accident and took the pinfall loss for his team. An interesting turn of events afterwards when Bryan definitely suggested that AJ's accident tonight was not really an accident. So whether the match happens at Crown Jewel, Survivor Series, SmackDown, or on WWE 2K19, I'm looking forward to seeing these two have a substantive one-on-one match.
- They showed the incident that happened between Charlotte and Becky at the Performance Center Saturday. I didn't like how Charlotte talked about reintroducing "her character" to the main roster. That felt too insider and made the whole thing seem like a show. Of course this is a show, but you shouldn't have wrestlers just openly saying "My character" on TV like this. That took the joy out of the rest of the promo for me. After that, I lost interest. I don't care if it was at the Performance Center "in context." That's still something that should have never made air on WWE TV.
- Rusev crushed Aiden English. And it was more competitive than it had any right of being.
- Rey Mysterio and The Miz did Miz TV. Nothing really noteworthy. It basically set up a Miz vs. Mysterio match after the break. And that's exactly what we get in a really fun match with Mysterio proving that age is just a number. He is looking excellent right now. The Miz is so over right now that he can lose and still come out unscathed.
- And we get our typical "women's match that is interrupted with women talking over each other to hype up a multi-person" match that we get once every 3-4 months that does nothing for anyone. But we're supposed to just accept it and walk on ignoring how stupid it looks every time.
Yeah. I'm not a fan at all of these kind of segments. This just proves WWE has too many microphones. Lol.
- And Crown Jewel gets booed again when Shane McMahon mentions it by name.
- Why did we have to get Randy Orton vs. Jeff Hardy again? I mean we got the greatest hits: Jeff does something crazy that backfires. Randy stretches Jeff's ear in insane ways. But this just felt so uneventful and boring. We just had Hell in a Cell back in September. And now, they're wrestling again without any hype for Hardy wanting revenge or anything. It's just another match. Just a bad ending for what was an ok edition of SmackDown overall.

Oh, and did you know there's a Women's Only-PPV this weekend? I forgot with all the build for Crown Jewel.

NXT Thoughts
- Really solid opening with The Undisputed Era putting the NXT brand on notice. I also enjoyed EC3 finally getting a win on NXT, beating Adam Cole with a harmless fluke rollup. That does nothing to hurt Adam Cole and gives EC3 a boost that he needed. The Undisputed Era beat the hell out of EC3 afterwards with Bobby Fish using a chair on his knee at the end of it. Great segment overall. Fish being the diabolical sadist is a good way to differentiate him from the other three members.
- Mia Yim made her NXT debut by facing and defeating Aliyah. Fun women's match overall. I want to see more of Mia Yim. So far, I'm interested.
- Kassius Ohno lives up to his knockout artist gimmick tonight. He still wants to face Regal's new shiny toy, bro. He makes quick work of the rookie he faced this week. Nikki Cross shows up after the match. "He's coming! He's coming! (laugh) He's coming!" Nikki's got a secret folks. It's becoming her gimmick. And I'm loving it.
- Speaking of the "King of Bros," Matt Riddle makes his debut next week. Alrighty then.
- I really missed Mauro for the main segment here to close the show. With Lars Sullivan choking Velveteen Dream, Nikki Cross runs in and yells "He's here! He's here!" And the camera shows Aleister Black beating the Indy security guys. And as Black comes in the ring and gets in Regal's face, he turns around... AND GETS KICKED BY JOHNNY GARGANO! GARGANO IS IN ALL BLACK AND SAYS "I'M RIGHT HERE." Right now, this is where Mauro would be screaming "NO! NO! JOHNNY GARGANO WAS THE ONE WHO ASSAULTED ALEISTER BLACK! WHY JOHNNY?! WHY?! HOW COULD YOU?!" (Mauro will be back thankfully for WarGames.)

Overall, this was a very good episode of NXT. We got progression towards The Undisputed Era assaulting whomever crosses their path, EC3 got a much-needed win, Mia Yim made her debut, Ohno and Riddle are now destined to collide, Nikki had a secret, and we now know who attacked Aleister Black. What it lacked in in-ring work (except for Cole-EC3), this show made up for mattering overall.

MLW (Episode 27; 10/20/18 on YouTube)
- El Hijo de LA Park takes on Sammy Guevara in the first match of the show. A nice, high-flying match by both men. Plenty of dives by both men. El Hijo hit a nice Spanish Fly off the top and caught Guevara in position for a piledriver to win the match. Fun opener overall.
- Samoan Island Tribe (Lance and Samu) vs. Smash and Dash Connection (Brazil and Hughes) was next. Barrington Hughes is a mammoth individual. The Samoans do a smart thing by putting Hughes on the outside, focusing their attention on Brazil. Slow, methodical match here with the Samoans playing the game of keeping Brazil away from the corner to tag Hughes. But it wasn't the most exciting or well executed match either. The big guy gets tagged in, and the match ends in about 90 seconds with the Connection getting the win.
- Shane Strickland took on Tom Lawlor in the main event. Lawlor, as you would expect, is using his MMA style of competing in his match. Lawlor slips on the apron early on. Good back and forth scientific style match with some hard hitting strikes thrown in. Low-Ki gets involved in the match and gets a kick in on Lawlor. Afterwards, Strickland continues to work on Lawlor, including working on Lawlor's arm. Rear Naked Choke by Lawlor gets Strickland to tap out. That was a solid main event overall.

This was an alright show overall with the main event being the only true match I would recommend.

NXT UK Thoughts (10/24/18)
- Ligero takes on "Wild Boar" Mike Hitchman. I swear to God this Wild Boar must be the son of Mantaur and Luna Vachon. Ligero, a lightweight, wrestles a combination of lucha libre and British Strong Style. Wild Boar uses his power and size to his advantage throughout, including dives into the corner and a Pop-Up Powerbomb. A Tornado DDT wins the match for Ligero in a harmless opening contest.
- Dakota Kai faces Killer Kelly. And it was a really good women's match. Both women had some great looking offense, and Dakota Kai looked to legitimately take a couple feet to the face in the corner at one point. But this was definitely another good match on this show.
- Zack Gibson came out and got more heat than a pizza in the oven. The crowd absolutely booed him out of the building to the point where I had difficulty hearing him on the microphone. That's great heat. He even had the audience taking their shoes off to show how much they hated him. Dang. He goes off on Noam Dar. Dar comes out, and NXT UK GM Johnny Saint comes out and tells Dar and Gibson to come to his office now. (Um... What is he? A high school principal?)
- Ashton Smith takes on and defeats Tucker in what was another very solid match on this show. It was very short, but it was a decent showcase for both men.
- The main event saw Wolfgang take on Tyler Bate. Basic type of match you would expect from these two. Wolfgang using his size advantage against Bate while Bate uses his strength and heart to eventually overcome and defeat Wolfgang. Nothing out of the ordinary, but a solid match nonetheless.

A very solid hour of wrestling here folks. I know it's ANOTHER hour of wrestling added to our week, but NXT UK is proving to be worth the time, just like its American cousin.

ROH Thoughts (10/19/18)
- Coast 2 Coast demands to take on The Briscoes first before the originally scheduled Scurll/Sabin match. The Briscoes come out, and we have our match. This was another one of those Briscoe matches in which you already know the outcome and just wait for it to come already. There's nothing technically wrong with the match itself. The inevitable outcome, however, does distract from the match itself.
- Jay Lethal promises to solve Matt Taven's problem with him (namely, Taven holding a fake ROH World Championship). I just hope ROH can solve the problem of Matt Taven main-eventing PPVs once The Bullet Club are gone from ROH. I'm really afraid for this promotion come 2019. The G1 SuperShow in MSG could be this company's brightest night. But like a lot of shining stars, if it shines too bright too quickly, it may burn out just as quickly.
- Jeff Cobb challenged Punishment Martinez for the ROH TV Championship and won the belt in 2 minutes. Martinez has been a dominant monster for ROH for a while, but Cobb is the new signee to the company. And Martinez is on the way out. I think you can put 2 and 2 together folks. Still, this was one hell of a way to give Cobb a big rub and set him up as the new TV Champion.
- Tenille Dashwood comes out and talks about her shoulder injury and her autoimmune disease. She then talks about not being able to get back at whomever attacked her and needing surgery. So, this is a bit of a work with a bit of shoot realism to it.
- Marty Scurll faced Chris Sabin in the main event. Fun opening sequence where both men mirrored each others moves over and over. The match becomes a typical Scurll match as it develops with a lot of European style wrestling with the typical showboating to the crowd. Sabin and Scurll have again a typical good match for what you would expect out of both men. Scurll gets Sabin finally after a series of rollups, a Chicken Wing attempt, and finally getting his Graduation finisher.

Overall, this was a very big improvement over some of the other ROH shows I've seen in recent weeks. Every match had a purpose, and the main event match felt like a good TV main event. This is what I want to see out of ROH, not the "Cheeseburger in the main event, Matt Taven giving a 5 minute promo" types of shows.

The winner for this week was NXT. Then after that, I would put NXT UK. Then, I'd go with Raw (even without the Roman Reigns announcement). Then, I'd go with ROH. Then, I'd go with MLW which didn't outlive its usefulness and anger people. In last place, I'd go with SmackDown Live which outlived its usefulness and angered people.

Podcast Recommendation of the Week
I'm going to give the nod to Talk is Jericho for the podcast discussing the Jericho Rock and Rager Cruise. It's a great listen about what went into the cruise, the difficulties involved, the awesome stuff they have prepared for everyone, and more. I wish I was able to go on it, but hopefully, the Rock and Rager will have a second voyage in the future.

WWE Evolution Predictions + Thoughts on An Underpromoted All-Women PPV

Credit: WWE WWE Evolution Promotional Poster This should feel like a bigger deal. After all, this is the first time ever that an All-Women PPV is taking place under the WWE corporate umbrella. But WWE has done a great job of completely killing the show with an uninspired card, lack of promotion, lack of interest overall, and finding a million different other things to promote to undermine the event. Still, some fans (like myself) want to give the women their due and hope to enjoy this show. Here's a rundown of the card and my predictions for each match: 1) Raw Women's Championship: Ronda Rousey (c) vs. Nikki Bella If this goes longer than 5 minutes, it's definitely too long. As good as Nikki can be in the ring (at times), Rousey should just absolutely massacre her. The only ways to prolong this match in a realistic way would be 1) an injury angle or 2) Twin Magic with Brie interfering. Otherwise, this should be short and awesome. Prediction: Ronda Retains 2)...

WWE TLC 2018 Review- Tables and Ladders and Chairs, Oh My!

HERE WE GO!    Pre-Show   1) WWE Cruiserweight Championship   Buddy Murphy (champ) vs. Cedric Alexander   They started this match early. Apparently, they wanted just as many fans in the arena as there usually are in 205 Live matches for this to give it the authentic feel.   The bell rings. A lot of tie-ups and switches to start up the match to a good reaction from the crowd. A Loud 205 Chant. Alexander takes down Murphy to the floor. Really good back and forth action here with both men moving quickly. Alexander catches Murphy with a dropkick for a 2 count. BIG KNEE to the head of Alexander sends him to the floor. Murphy flies off the top rope and hits a Meteora (maybe that’s what they were going for?) for a 2 count. Murphy has the advantage for a few moments, including a power choke on the corner on Alexander. He jumps off it to eat a SUPERKICK to the chest. Crowd seems invested in the matc...

WWE Super Show-Down 2018 Review: Last Time Ever Delivers + Some Other Solid Matches

Another big show in the WWE this year will happen today as WWE comes from Melbourne, Australia in front of 70,000 people. A lot of big matches are happening here. Let's Do This! No Pre-Show today. It's straight to the show. The new WWE opening takes place, and we get a WWE video package putting over the show and the LAST TIME EVER match. It looks like the Raw Announce Team will be calling the show. We go to the arena, and they've already spent more money on fireworks than they have for WWE programming this year. 70,309 in attendance. For once, the entrance way is understated. 1) SmackDown Live Tag Team Championship The Bar vs. The New Day (c) I wonder if Vince/WWE Management is ordering people to run the aisle tonight. Both tag teams were doing that coming to the ring.  Nice back and forth action with Kingston and Cesaro, along with Woods after getting the tag. Woods and Kingston had an awesome sequence of moves to start off. The Bar a minute later catches bot...
